Definition
The factor – Strategic Coordination and Communication Mechanisms – involves four elements:
- Formalized communication processes,
- Strategic plan development by partners,
- Coordinated clinical and administrative services,
- Exchange of client/health information.
An organizational factor which influences successful collaborations between primary care and public health is strategic coordination and communication mechanisms. Four elements which describe this factor support building a common understanding of the collaboration among all partners. This helps to ensure that everyone is on the same page and working in an organized and coordinated fashion towards a common goal over time.
- One of the elements is formalized communication processes, which refers to formal mechanisms used to continuously stay in communication with all partners at all levels (from the front line to the executive leaders) in the collaboration.
- A second element is strategic planning development by all partners which can help ensure that there is an organized and agreed upon plan and approach to meet common goals.
- Third, coordinated clinical and administrative services are needed for smooth functioning of the collaboration, such as the development of shared policies and procedures. Without these elements, duplication of services can easily occur.
- Finally, exchange of client and health information is a critical element to ensure that relevant information is shared. Sharing information can increase awareness of programs and services and can enhance a collaboration process.
