Lessons Learned

An organizational culture of collaboration can be built and maintained by:

  • Demonstrating value in the work of the other sector, which in turn builds trust and shows respect leading to a collaborative culture;
  • Promoting organizational readiness for collaboration through the establishment of a clear understanding of the desired outcome of the collaboration and working toward common goals;
  • Avoiding policies or activities that lead to role and resource protection – in other words turf protection;
  • Developing and sustaining an inherent philosophy and buy-in at all levels in the organizations that facilitates and enhances a collaborative culture;
  • Showcasing successes of collaboration is key to developing strong relationships between sectors, facilitating ongoing collaborative development, and maintaining a culture of collaboration.
