A public health physician’s perspective on the relationship among factors.

I think one thing public health nurses cannot do is assume they can walk into primary care and easily build a trusting relationship with a physician practice.

It takes time. It takes melding a work process.

One of the things I have often seen is frustration on the part of everybody when a physician does not easily make time for a public health nurse to interact with them. And the nurses get ticked off because they think the physician does not care about prevention. And the physician gets ticked off because he has not got a clue who this nurse is and what he or she is actually going to be doing.

So until there is better communication, and trust is built up, and then the trust allows for people to relook at their values and attitudes and work processes, and try to blend all these together, not very much is going to be successful.
